Vulnerable

When you think of the phrase ‘vulnerable population’ do seafarers come to mind? We had a ship come into port recently on which the crew had not been paid for 3 months. Because of communication difficulties and the complexity of systems in the maritime shipping industry, seafarers are vulnerable to a number of abuses. In this… [Read More]

A Letter from Fr. Stube Regarding the Fall Event

Dear Friends of SCI: This year we have challenged ourselves to make our Fall Event affordable for all in the port.  This is in line with our role in the port of providing an accessible place where the people in all parts of the maritime industry might gather to network and socialize. Ordinary Things

“We are not called by God to do extraordinary things, but to do ordinary things with extraordinary love.” This quote has been on my mind a lot lately as I think about SCI’s mission and how we strive to carry out that mission on a day to day basis. Chatting with a seafarer over a cup… [Read More]

Industry Changes Affect Seafaring Life

There are times when ship visiting can feel routine and mundane. But there are also days, like today, when you walk down the gangway with a full heart and a smile because of an experience you had on board. This morning I visited the Spiegelgracht, a ship carrying paper that was coming from Belguim. I… [Read More]

Think of Seafarers this Valentine’s Day!

Can’t think of anything to get your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day and have settled on the traditional gift of chocolate? You have seafarers to thank for that. "AN UNFORGETTABLE SHORE LEAVE"

The Second Officer of the crude oil tanker UMLMA sent a note and some pictures from a quck visit to Philadelphia while the vessel was berthed at Paulsboro last week.

"To visit Philadelphia was always my wish," he told us, and went on to describe how our host transporter Josh Simonetti made it happen. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

SCI Board president Captain David Cuff, vice president Michael Cureton, and executive director Helene Pierson hosted an appreciation dinner for a group of volunteers last week on the Moshulu.

SCI operates with a very small staff and relies on volunteers for help as Chaplains, host transporters, and office workers, among other responsibilities.

"We deeply appreciate their commitment," says Helene, "and we're very focused on making sure they are in turn enriched and fulfilled by the experience." ... See MoreSee Less

FASTER THAN FACEBOOK

Seafarers sometimes contact us by Facebook to request a WIFI hot spot. We respond quickly, but in this case Dan Dolan, our new host transporter, got there just when the message was sent. The seafarer sent this picture of Dan already doing the paperwork that goes along with delivering the free commnication devices. ... See MoreSee Less
