Trish’s First Few Months

After a 7 month long stay in Philadelphia, the Nicolina and her crew finally got underway last week. I was able to be on the pier as she pulled away, and I found myself in a reflective mood. Maybe it was the unseasonably warm weather, the perfect sunset down the river, or the atmosphere on… [Read More]

SCI Vans Make Family Reunions and More Possible

SCI’s vans cover more than 100,000 miles each year as they visit numerous ships at over 30 terminals. These miles take us bring us to many unique situations, from which some amazing stories, like the following, emerge. SCI has been involved with a number of family member reunions lately. The most recent was the story… [Read More]

Seafarers are a Part of Economic Growth

Two new industries are coming to the New Jersey Riverfront! They will have a definite positive impact on the local economy, and with more activity on the waterfront comes more ships and more seafarers! The Port of Paulsboro has a new tenant! Our Ministry

September 11, 2001 completely altered the way we do our mission. While our mission to be Good Samaritans for seafarers has not changed from the beginning, the way we work out that mission is very different. Click here to read more about how our ministry to seafarers has changed in recent years. We offer Human… [Read More]

The Seafarer’s Life

The portrait of a cargo-ship worker has changed since SCI began serving the Delaware Riverway in 1843. Seamen often take jobs as seafarers to lift their families out of poverty. They are on-call as needed, and travel all over the globe to work in often unregulated conditions, with people they don’t know and who may… [Read More]

Seafarers on cargo ships are key to our local economy. While they bring us our goods, they are isolated at sea for many months, away from… [Read More]

"AN UNFORGETTABLE SHORE LEAVE"

The Second Officer of the crude oil tanker UMLMA sent a note and some pictures from a quck visit to Philadelphia while the vessel was berthed at Paulsboro last week.

"To visit Philadelphia was always my wish," he told us, and went on to describe how our host transporter Josh Simonetti made it happen. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

SCI Board president Captain David Cuff, vice president Michael Cureton, and executive director Helene Pierson hosted an appreciation dinner for a group of volunteers last week on the Moshulu.

SCI operates with a very small staff and relies on volunteers for help as Chaplains, host transporters, and office workers, among other responsibilities.

"We deeply appreciate their commitment," says Helene, "and we're very focused on making sure they are in turn enriched and fulfilled by the experience." ... See MoreSee Less

FASTER THAN FACEBOOK

Seafarers sometimes contact us by Facebook to request a WIFI hot spot. We respond quickly, but in this case Dan Dolan, our new host transporter, got there just when the message was sent. The seafarer sent this picture of Dan already doing the paperwork that goes along with delivering the free commnication devices. ... See MoreSee Less
